Frequently Asked Questions about becoming a CREATIVE COLLABORATOR.

WHAT ARE THE KEY DATES AND DEADLINES?

  1. March 26, 2012:  Application Deadline
  2. March 15, 2012:  Story Bank for research will be made accessible to confirmed Creative Collaborators.
  3. April 10, 2012:  Story Selection Deadline.
  4. April 14-June 3, 2012:  Installation Creation Workshops.
  5. June 4-6, 2012: The Encampment is set-up on grounds of Fort York
  6. June 7, 2012: Art installations inspired by stories are set-up by Creative Collaborators
  7. June 8, 2012: Opening Night (Luminato)
  8. June 17, 2012: War of 1812 Bicentennial Launch.
  9. June 24, 2012: Closing.
  10. June 25, 2012: Creative Collaborators strike their tent installations.
  11. June 26, 2012: Production strike of all tents.

CAN ANYONE APPLY?

Yes. Our work is open and inclusive and all interested individuals are encouraged to apply. Individuals 18 or under may participate with a family member or guardian 18 years of age or over. Acceptance is based on your real interest in the artistry and content and your commitment to the Installation Creation Process.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I APPLY?

We will consider your request and respond. Once selected you will be eventually sent a link to our Creative Collaborator on-line agreement form to confirm your commitment to participate. You will have 72 hours to complete and submit the form. You will then be given access to the Story Bank.

WHAT IS THE STORY BANK?

The Story Bank is a on-line resource developed by our studio. It includes the hundreds of biographies of individuals who lived in Canada during The War of 1812. It has been designed as a starting point to help you break ground in your archaeological dig into the civilian history of the War of 1812.

WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THE STORY BANK? 

Read the stories and choose one that inspires you as the subject/content for the art installation you will create. Please remember that the stories available on a first come first serve basis. Once selected it will no longer be available.

I HAVE SELECTED A STORY, WHAT DO I DO NOW?

Send us an e-mail to collaborate@thomasandguinevere right away and let us know which story! We will send a confirmation of your request and change the status of the story in the Story Bank to “TAKEN.”

CAN I CONTRIBUTE A STORY OF SOMEONE I HAVE DISCOVERED THROUGH MY OWN RESEARCH?

Yes, but it will be subject to the artists’ approval. Please send us an e-mail that includes their name, their story, an image if possible, related links and we will consider to include it in the Story Bank.

CAN I CHOOSE A STORY THAT IS NOT IN THE STORY BANK?

No. However, you can submit a story as described above and if accepted, you are welcome to choose that story.

CAN I SELECT MY STORY BEFORE APRIL 2, 2012?

Yes. You may select a story at any point after you have been selected as a Creative Collaborator. It will actually give you more time to extend your research about that person and their story.

WHAT DO I DO ONCE I HAVE SELECTED MY STORY?

You can further your own archaeological dig into history of your story. There are books available in libraries and history societies, as well as the city, provincial and federal archives to visit in person or on-line. Regions throughout Canada and the US have also developed regional and national websites to coincide with the Bicentennial.

WHAT HAPPENS IN AN INSTALLATION CREATION WORKSHOP?

Creative Collaborators will work collaboratively and with us (the artists) in the process of creating art installations inspired by their selected stories to be housed within the tents. To support everyone in their work and to allow for a continuity between all installations, we created a Design Journal. Each workshop will focus on a particular aspect of installation creation process as outlined in this Design Journal. There will be 7 mandatory workshops to attend prior to the set-up.  They will offer time for individual creation and reflection and include time to dialogue with other Creative Collaborators.

CAN I HAVE MY INSTALLATION MADE BEFORE THE INSTALLATION CREATION WORKSHOP BEGINS?

No. Although everyone’s creative work will develop differently, we work as a collective to develop the installations. For us, it is important that we allow time for each collaborator to share ideas, reflect and contribute their skills and knowledge. This helps to create a connection between the 200 tent installations and throughout the installation as a whole. Though separated in their associated tent, these visual expressions of the selected stories are nevertheless bound by their total creative impact as an artwork.

HOW MANY HOURS WILL I HAVE TO COMMIT TO DOING THE WORKSHOPS?

Each of the 7 mandatory workshops will last approximately 3 hours (April 14 – June 3, 2012). In the final weeks each Creative Collaborator will get to set-up their installations inside the tents and receive feedback from the artists and their fellow Creative Collaborators.

WHEN CAN I SELECT MY WORKSHOP DATES AND TIMES?

The selection of dates and times will be included in the on-line agreement form sent after your initial acceptance.

ARE THE WORKSHOPS GOING TO BE WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE?

Yes. There are 3 small steps to get into the Blue Barracks. We will do our best to accommodate your entrance and departure.

DO I GET TO KEEP MY WORK?

Yes. On June 25th as part of the strike of The Encampment Creative Collaborators are encouraged to take their work home.

DO CREATIVE COLLABORATORS GET PAID?

No. Participation in The Encampment is based on the creative exchange of ideas, knowledge and resources and the collective development of a total work of art.

HOW DOES MY WORK AND EFFORT GET RECOGNIZED?

In the programme, on the website and through PR opportunities. Photographs and other documentation of the process and final artwork will be posted on the website as a testimony to what everyone created and shared together. Please see the previous versions of The Encampment on our website.

I CAN’T MAKE ALL OF THE WORKSHOPS, WHAT DO I DO?

Please send an e-mail to collaborate@thomasandguinevere.com to explain your circumstances and we will do out best to accommodate your needs. Attending the six workshops will still be mandatory.

DO I HAVE TO COMMIT TO ANY OTHER DAYS AND TIMES ONCE I HAVE COMPLETED MY INSTALLATION?

We ask that all Creative Collaborators sign up to participate a minimum of 4 evenings during the presentation of the The Encampment so that everyone has an opportunity to witness their work as part of the whole and dialogue and interact with the audience. Days and times will be flexible.

I CANNOT COMMIT TO BEING A CREATIVE COLLABORATOR; ARE THERE OTHERS WAY TO PARTICIPATE?

Yes. We are also looking for Production Collaborators to help with the set-up, presentation and strike of the artwork, as well as to help with Installation Maintenance and to participate in Front Of House activities.
